Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the world!

Tobacco kills up to half of its users who don’t quit. More than 8 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while around 1.3million are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.

(The World Health Organisation, 31 July 2023)

In 2020/21, 7,883 people were admitted to hospital in Lanarkshire with smoking related illness, which was more than Alcohol (4,992) and Drugs (1,461) combined.

About us

Tobacco is internationally recognised as a major public health threat. More than eight million deaths each year worldwide are as a direct result of tobacco use, with over one million attributed to second-hand smoke exposure. The production of tobacco is also destructive to the environment, with wide reaching health impacts

In Scotland, smoking causes one in five deaths. Over 8,000 lives a year are cut short from diseases caused by smoking, damaging lives from our earliest years to our latest. NHS Lanarkshire want to make it easier for young people to never start. This website provides information on tobacco and vaping and offers topic based workshops for children and young people.

The workshops created by our partners are for young people who want to find out more about smoking or are already smoking and are interested in gaining additional support to aid their attempts to stop.  The workshops can be led by anyone who is interested in offering a supportive and proactive role to dealing with the issue of smoking.
